Patriotic Weekend

Veterans' Day, followed by the weekend, makes one pause and think.

Democracy is hard fought. It doesn't just happen.

Thousands upon thousands of lives have been lost fighting for it.

This weekend, Americans just need to stop and think about how Democracy came about.

In one Western Massachusetts town, residents can pay $30 and get a flag in memory of a loved one who is or was a veteran of any branch of the U.S. Armed Services.

The flags remain for awhile in the middle of the town on a grassy circle-of-sorts. There's a fountain in the middle.

Those flags, hundreds of them, wave in the breeze, making a sight so magnificent it can easily bring tears to the eyes.

When the flags are eventually taken down, the people who bought the flags can keep them.

They make great gifts!

During this time of deep unrest in our country,  Democracy is being sorely tested.

Americans must stop and think of the huge loss of human lives it took to seek and achieve Democracy.

It must be preserved, cherished and never, ever forgotten.

WHAT DOES DEMOCRACY MEAN TO YOU?

I want to thank all the Veterans out there - THANK YOU for your service!
I also think democracy - we should have peace and harmony - I know it doesn't really mean that - but we are all just not that different - we are lucky to be free!

What a wonderful tribute. I always think of my late father who was a POW in WWII. How sacrifice like so many others should never be forgotten. xo Laura

Democracy means FREEDOM to me. So many other countries do not have it. We do and it must be preserved. I love the flags...so glad you got one in our Father's name. Happy Veteran's day and thanks to all who served our country.

Democracy means responsibility, work, and dedication to an ideal that every man, woman, and child are afforded the same rights and priveleges as mandated by their creator.
